5-stars Dreamgirls – Savoy Theatre (West End)

Full marks must go to Richard Brooker for outstanding sound for this production of Dreamgirls. Every word was heard in this dynamic musical. Henry Krieger’s mighty score and Tom Eyens poignant lyrics filled the Savoy Theatre with vitality and a pulsing vibrancy that I’ve rarely heard from theatre sound.

4-stars Dreamgirls – Savoy Theatre (West End)

..Richard Brooker’s sound is spot on, deftly balancing the vocals with Nick Finlow’s masterly command of the 12 strong band. The sounds are hot and vibrant, and the look and feel of the show never falls short of that standard.

The Bodyguard (US Tour)

The superior design team — set and costumes by Tim Hatley, lights by Mark Henderson, video by Duncan McLean, sound by Richard Brooker — is outstanding. You feel like you’re at an arena concert with pulsating music, well-sculpted backup singers/dancers, flashy costumes, meticulous choreography, jets of steam and gyrating lights.

The Bodyguard (US Tour)

The contributions of lighting designer Mark Henderson and sound designer Richard Brooker provide additional levels of overall scenic excellence.

Funny Girl – Menier Chocolate Factory

Richard Brooker’s sound design has a wonderfully natural sound for the modest-sized auditorium, and balance with the band of ten musicians is excellent.

4-stars Sister Act – UK Tour

Richard Brooker’s sound design is very appropriate to the setting, including subtle echo on dialogue occurring within the convent. The balance between the music and vocals is flawless, especially with so much going on, with many of the performers being actor-musicians.

Sister Act – UK Tour

Special mention should also go to Richard Brooker for his sound design as he managed to create that echo/reverb that one often gets in a large church.

5-stars Last Tango – UK Tour

Credit must also be given to sound designer Richard Brooker who manages to deliver the rare feat of a perfect balance in the notoriously difficult venue of the [Liverpool] Empire Theatre.

Last Tango – UK Tour

Alpha-pluses also to that lively ensemble… and a small pit band…that come across as twice the size, thanks probably to sonic designer Richard Brooker and the orchestrations of Chris Egan and Matt Smith.

5-stars Xanadu – Southwark Playhouse

Also impressive is the sound design. Some previous musical  productions at the Southwark Playhouse have suffered in this regard, but here not only are the singers’ voices and the band (led by musical director Andrew Bevis) perfectly balanced, but the reverb given to the Greek gods adds the requisite pomposity without ever risking clarity. So many Fringe shows fail to get such details right that it’s refreshing to be able to hear everything in balance for once.
